If you have friends with children, you’ll know that children can be a source of both profound joy as well as deep frustration. They’re an unending drain on your time, as well as your bank balance, and sometimes parents might wish for their kids to hurry up and grow already, so they don’t have to keep buying clothes and shoes in new, larger sizes. Kids also turn parents into liars, since they need to keep up the charade that Santa Claus is alive and well in the North Pole, and that the Tooth Fairy will visit during the night to take that tooth away, and will pay for the privilege. And then of course, kids turn into teenagers and become grouchy creatures who listen to loud, bad music and spend way too much time in their rooms. Of course, those who are having trouble conceiving would give anything to be able to go through the trials and tribulations of parenthood. Sometimes conception is difficult, and pregnancy is only possible with fertility treatments. It can be tempting to run to the doctor if you don’t get pregnant right away, and of course this is an option… but if you’re not falling pregnant as easily as you thought, there can be many reasons why- some of them are obvious, and others are a little more surprising.

Stay Healthy

This is something to strive for, even if you’re not planning to have a baby anytime soon. But for those who are trying to become parents, smoking and excessive alcohol should be avoided.

Watch Your Weight

Obesity is thought to be a major factor in infertility, and in some parts of the world (such as the United Kingdom), fertility treatment won’t be approved until the prospective mother has slimmed down to a healthier weight that improves the chances of conception. Obesity in men is also an issue since it can affect sperm production.

Your Medical History

Previous surgeries might have had an effect on your reproductive abilities, and so can prior existing conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and even some sexually transmitted diseases. If you’re finding it difficult to conceive, consider your medical history, and you might find some answers.

Your Medical Present

Sometimes taking certain kinds of medications, or even regular use of aspirin can prevent you from having a fertile future. This is certainly something to discuss with your doctor, because while you might be on a medication that makes it difficult to fall pregnant, there can be health repercussions if you simply stop taking it.

And Finally…

Wanting a baby can easily be the biggest desire in a person’s life, and if it’s not achieved so easily it can also be a cause of deep stress. While it’s highly important to you, don’t let it take over your life. It can be frustrating if it’s not coming together as you expected, but don’t get too stressed out- there are many options available, and with a bit of trial and error, you’ll find something that works for you.
