Working the Night Shift? How to Rest Better During the Day

One of the most difficult things about working the night shift is sleeping during the day. The light streaming in the windows and the noise can be enough to drive you crazy. The good news is that with a few simple changes you can make your bedroom a cozy sleep environment that will allow you the rest you need. Whether you install thermal curtains or turn off your phone, you can rest better during the day.

Install Thermal Curtains

Thermal curtains are useful for getting better sleep for two reasons. First of all, these double-lined curtains create darkness in the room. Second, thermal curtains keep your room cool in the summer and warm in the winter. As well all know, sleep comes easier when you’re not worried about a gigantic power bill.

Soundproof Your Bedroom

Soundproofing your bedroom is another great idea, especially for those that live in the city. Just because you’re trying to sleep during the day, doesn’t mean everyone else is. The world will continue to buzz around you, that’s why it’s essential to deaden the noise. Soundproofing can be done by hanging thick curtain (another great reason for thermal curtains), installing double pane windows, and making sure the cracks around the windows are well sealed.

Use Earplugs

If you’re a light sleeper, it may not be enough to soundproof your room. This is where earplugs come in handy. With the combination of a soundproofed room, you’ll be less apt to get woken up. It may take several attempts to find a comfortable brand, but earplugs can be a miracle when working the night shift.

Adjust the Thermostat

Temperature is key when trying to get a good day’s rest and it’s been proven that people sleep better when the room feels a bit chilly. Setting your thermostat to around 70 degrees in the summer, and 68 in the winter, can make a huge difference in how you sleep. You can increase the effects of the cooler temperature by taking a warm shower before heading to bed.

Turn Off Your Phone

Last, but not least, stop making yourself accessible to everyone. If you continue to answer your phone during the daytime hours, people will continue to call. Instead, turn your phone off during set hours and get the rest you need.

Working the night shift isn’t exactly fun, but many companies are willing to pay more money for working third shift. While learning to sleep during the day can be difficult at first, following these tips will make it easier to sleep better.
