College could be intimidating for many freshmen, but they can make their first year much easier. The first thing to do is get to know roommates and neighbors in the dorm. Barely hours after they officially live in the dorm, students could already feel lonely, bored and badly homesick. In this situation, students need to smile a lot and prop the door open. They shouldn’t be afraid to say hi to people they first meet. Chances are, other freshmen are feeling anxious as well and they are eager to know others in the dorm. After a few days, homesickness could start to subside and students will feel less miserable. During the first few days, it can be challenging to find proper food near the dorm.
Freshmen should skip late night pizza and ramen starting from day one. It is true that eating real, healthy food can be quite challenging, but there should be an alternative to those slimy noodles and greasy pizza. It is time to ask a few new friends to cruise along the roads near the campus ground to find affordable and healthy food alternatives. There should be affordable eating places near campus ground where students can find healthy food. Nearby grocery stores near the campus should provide plenty of produce and fruits. The college cafeteria should provide some healthy alternatives at lower costs. The first day in the class could be a little intimidating and it’s not a good idea to skip class. Students will feel much better if they are able to catch up early. Students could feel tired in the first morning, due to lack of sleep and anxiety. But they could feel even more worried when their grades start to drop.
If the college environment is still intimidating enough, students may find some respite in the library. This should be a good opportunity to study or read any relaxing books without the distractions in the dorm rooms. During specific nights, it could be quite difficult to resist the peer pressure. In libraries, distraction should be non-existent or minimal. It means that we should be do anything quietly. During first months in the college, students should look for ways to get and stay involved. There are many ways for freshmen to become active on campus and there’s no way to make friends if we sit alone in the dorm room. We should check the campus for activities and interesting clubs. There are a wide variety of activities that we could and we should stick with friends who could provide us with many opportunities.
In order to make things easier, we should still be in contact with our family. Smartphones make it easier to establish communication. Other than voice calls, we could use social media, email and instant messaging to stay connected with family and friends at home. This way should be able to keep our homesickness to a minimum. Things will be much easier if freshmen know how to get properly organized. Things in any storage area should be tidy and organized. Our roommate could be messy and disorganized, but we should be able to keep ourselves properly organized. Differences in perspective and lifestyle could cause strains and conflicts with roommates. In this situation, students should be prepared to meet anyone with different background and behaviors.
